What is EMDR?

EMDR is different from talk therapy. EMDR therapy is a structured type of therapy that uses bilateral eye movements, body tapping or other rhythmic movements to desensitive and reprocess emotions, resulting in replacing negative associations with positive ones. The client works with the therapist to target specific memories and think of different aspects of the memory while following bilateral movements. As internal associations arise, the client begins to process the memory. EMDR therapy results in changing the meaning of a painful event.

Results

The transformation can be noticed emotionally and physically. Clients report EMDR therapy helps them feel differently about the memory, concluding less negative associations and symptoms. Clients feel healed and empowered, with their emotional wounds feeling transformed and less bothersome. EMDR helps replace thoughts, feelings and behaviors, with an improvement in emotional health and resolution, without verbalizing in detail or completing homework that is often used in other therapies.
